X-Factor: Rihanna and Christina Aguilera Too Hot
X-Factor finale Rihanna and Christina Aguilera are too hot for UK TV.
Last week Simon Cowell’s British TV show X-Factor aired its finale during which Christina Aguilera and Rihanna performed. Apparently their performances were a little too hot for some Brits.
For those who are not familiar with X-Factor, it is a show similar to American Idol in that it is a singing competition where legions of hopefuls try out and are slowly narrowed down to a small group of 16. Once they reach 16 each of the four judges including Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole mentor four of the acts. They help them put together their weekly performances, choose their songs, style and everything. From there it is much like American Idol in that the fans vote for their favorites. The bottom two vote getters perform one last time then the judges choose which of them to send home. The show is huge in the U.K. and Cowell is bringing it to the U.S. this fall where I expect it to be a huge hit.
Like American Idol, X-Factor tries to get big name stars as guests on the show. This year during the finals Rihanna and Christina Aguilera both pulled double duty. They each sang a duet with one of the finalist in the competition and they also performed their own songs. 17.2 million viewers tuned into the show, however 2,750 of them were offended by what they saw. They claimed that the singers gave performances that were too racy for TV and they filed a complaint with Ofcom (which is the U.K.’s version of the FCC). Ofcom is said to be investigating the complaints
It is hard to know what people are angry about. During Christina Aguilera’s performance she wore fishnet stockings and a short black dress, but nothing was shown and she even had the cleavage in check. For Aguilera, who loves to show off her body, it was very conservative. However, her dancers were wearing very little including skirts so short they really weren’t skirts and some lingerie including corsets, thigh high stocking s and bra/panty sets. Rihanna came out in a floor length gown which she had a dancer take off halfway through her song to reveal a sexy bra and panty type outfit underneath. I think it was meant to be underwear, but looked more like a 50’s era bikini to me. She did dance and showed off her fantastic booty, but neither performer did anything even close to raunchy.
Apparently those who complained said the performances broke a broadcasting code that protects children for viewing inappropriate shows too early in the morning. So far all Simon Cowell’s company has said is that they are confident that the performances given by Christina Aguilera and Rihanna were appropriate for the show.
I guess this little controversy gives the show a nice little bit added publicity now that they have crowned a winner and will be off the air until this fall when they go live in the U.S. There is no word on what type of trouble the show or its producers could be in if they are found to have violated the Ofcom rules. My guess is that they would have to pay some kind of fine.
