Voice of America Real Competition for American Idol
Voice of America may be the real competition for American Idol, from Big Brother and Survivor producers on NBC
It looks like American Idol may be having some competition. Voice of America is NBC’s new singing competition. The new show is set to premiere in April, and producers include Mark Burnett (Survivor) and John de Mol (Big Brother). So what does this show have that American Idol doesn’t?
Apparently Voice of America judges won’t be able to take appearance into account when casting hopefuls for the show. The show is based on a very popular Dutch show known as Voice of Holland. Apparently; there will be four celebrity coaches who will have their backs turned to contestants while they are singing. If the coaches dig what they hear, they press a button (yes, a button) and that person as then claimed as that coach’s student. The contestant then gets to move on to the next round.
So what does this show have that American Idol lacks? Honestly, I’m not seeing much of a difference. Sure there is more anonymity for the contestants (which will surely mean that some ugly people get through), but aside from that kitsch factor, it seems like NBC is a little bit desperate, and consequently falling back on a formula that seems to work.
Will Voice of America “wow” viewers? Only time will tell. Who knows, maybe an ugly American Idol reject is waiting behind the curtains get a shot at Susan Boyle fame!
