2011 Golden Globe Nominations: Black Swan, The King’s Speech and Social Network
The nominees have been announced, and the stars are abuzz regarding the 2011 Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture.
So what are the lucky picks? Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King’s Speech, and The Social Network.
Past recent winners have included Slumdog Millionaire, Atonement, Babel, and Brokeback Mountain. Older winners include such classics as Sunset Blvd, The Godfather, The Exorcist, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Rocky.
The Golden Globe Awards, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), first debuted in 1951. The HPFA are composed of journalists mainly interested in United States affairs, but also affiliated with foreign press and publications. It used to be that there was a single category for Best Picture, but now there are Drama or Musical-or-Comedy categories.
There have also been some surprises regarding this year’s nominations. For example, True Grit was not nominated for anything, although the film has generally received a lot of praise. Meanwhile, there were nominations for The Tourist, which opened to pretty poor reviews overall (although Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie star in it). The HPFA are certainly good at keeping people on their toes!
There has been a lot of speculation about who will win for Best Drama. The King’s Speech has received the most nominations (seven!) compared to the other films; even though not many people have seen it (it isn’t even out yet!) Who do you think will win? I honestly have no idea!
