Jane Lynch Dissed? Ed O’Neill Explains
Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) explains his alleged Jane Lynch (Glee) diss.
Known most for his role on Modern Family, Ed O’Neill has sparked controversy recently when it was reported that he said that Jane Lynch shouldn’t have won her Emmy for her role on Glee. Apparently, his exact quote was erroneously reported, and TV Guide Canada has issued a retraction, apologizing.
What was actually said? “I’m one of Jane Lynch’s biggest fans. I love Jane Lynch… But at the same time I said ‘Sofia could win’ … I’ve only seen Glee once.” This seems fair enough, and Ed O’Neill makes it clear that he admires Jane Lynch.
However, O’Neill has also said the following, “But I thought Jane’s role is rather one-dimensional… It’s always kind of the same. I’ve seen her be much better. So I thought, ‘Sofia’s funnier,’ and I think she is in these two comparative roles. Anyway, Jane won. But I was hoping that Sofia would.” O’Neil does currently star alongside Sofia Vergara on Modern Family, so his loyalty is understandable. But when you are an on-screen actor, you can expect to have your words put under scrutiny.
Ed O’Neill attempts to justify his words by saying that he is a big fan of Lynch. But at the same time, he says that her role is “one-dimensional”. These are pretty harsh words coming from someone who claims to have seen Glee only “once.”
While O’Neill has never won an Emmy himself, Modern Family has won six Emmys this year. Constructive criticism is great, but maybe O’Neill should save his words for an Opinion column, or work towards winning an Emmy for himself before ridiculing others on their acting ability!
