Lady GaGa Trend Causing Blindness
Lady GaGa has sparked a new trend that may leave her fans with severe eye problems and even blindness. The pop-superstar wore wide-eyed brightly colored contact lenses in her ‘Bad Romance’ video, which prompted fans to order illegal lenses from Asia to imitate her. Lady GaGa’s fans are trying to copy her look by wearing the lenses but the fad is leading the to eye infections and other ocular problems.
Eye specialists fear that the Lady GaGa “circle” contact lens trend can be extremely dangerous when purchased over the Internet without a prescription. A spokeswoman for the United States Food and Drug Administration says, “consumers risk significant eye injuries, even blindness when they buy contact lenses without a valid prescription or help from an eye professional.” Dr. Barry Eiden, chairman of the contact lens and cornea section of the American Optometric Association, said that people selling circle lenses online “are encouraging the avoidance of professional care.” Others argue that the lenses are a simple beauty enhancement much like wearing mascara or eyeliner. There is even a tutorial on youtube.com by a Lancôme makeup artist showing us how to get the “GaGa wide-eyed look”.
A statement has been released urging Lady GaGa fans to understand that the contact lenses worn in her “Bad Romance” video have been digitally enhanced to create the weird look. Despite the warnings, sales for the “circle” lenses are continuously on the rise.
