Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take over the Mission: Impossible franchise and keep it turning out hits. This appears to be The Hurt Locker’s Oscar nominated Jeremy Renner’s mission. Renner is currently staring with Tom Cruise in the new Mission: Impossible movie titled Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The movie is currently in production shooting all over the world including Dubai where pictures have surfaced of Tom Cruise sitting on top of the world’s largest building.

Rumor has it that Renner’s character is some sort of an understudy or sidekick to Cruise’s Ethan Hunt as Hunt shows him the ropes during their mission. It is uncertain if he hands over the reins of the franchise at the end of this installment or a future installment. Of the rumors that he is taking over the franchise, Renner has confirmed that he is in line to take the baton, “It’s a franchise to potentially take over … I can’t predict the future and what they want, but that’s certainly the idea,” Renner said. He went on to say that he can’t go into details about the script and the he himself is waiting to see how it all pans out.

Renner has been on a tear as of lately. His Oscar nomination for The Hurt Locker helped land him a role in Ben Affleck’s acclaimed movie The Town and he has also been cast in the Marvel Comics movie The Avengers as Hawkeye.

Of Cruise, Renner gushes, “He’s Crazy…” saying, “He’s fearless. He’s great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better.”

We will have to wait and see if all this love translates into a good movie. It is being written by J.J. Abrams and is being directed by Brad Bird. Bird is mostly known for his work directing animated movies such as UP and The Incredibles. Abrams seems to always have interesting ideas, but it will be interesting to see how Bird deals with real people. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is scheduled for release on December 16, 2011.
