betty whiteLast night “Hot in Cleveland” made its debut on TV Land with stars such as Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and the lovely Betty White. The sitcom received pretty good reviews. New York Times stated: “This is not perhaps the most daring or avant-garde comedy on television, but there is nothing shameful about ‘Hot in Cleveland’.”

88-year-old Betty White plays Elka, a pungent housekeeper on TV Land’s  ‘Hot in Cleveland’, a show about three middle-aged female friends who lose out on an exciting two-week Paris vacation after their plane makes an unexpected emergency landing in Cleveland.

While going into a bar for some drinks, the ladies get all excited when the men find all of them very attractive and start to flirt with them, one of those men being 50 year old John Schneider. Even though White only appears in a few scenes of the debut, she still managed to take the show, leaving us laughing, still wanting more of her foul mouth, pot-smoking character, Elka.

“Hot in Cleveland” was created and written by Suzanne Martin, who wrote for “Frasier” and “Ellen,” and with Sean Hayes (from “Will and Grace”). Other stars of this new sitcom include; Valerie Bertinelli who plays Melanie, a recent divorcee, Jane Leeves as Joy, the unmarried beautician with clients such as ‘Oprah’. Finally there’s Victoria, played by Wendie Malick, a divorced former soap opera star who is only able to get roles playing a grandmother figure.

Actress and Comedian Betty White is best known as Rose Nylund on “The Golden Girls” which successfully ran from 1985 through 1992, earning her one ‘Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a comedy Series and was nominated every year until the show ended.   Her three costars Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan have all now passed away, Maclanahan being the most recent to pass on June 3, 2010.  White stated: “She was one of my dearest friends and that hurt, really hurt…She was doing better, she was coming around, so we didn’t expect it.”

Tune in for the next episode of “Hot in Cleveland’ on TV LAND, Wednesday night at 10, Eastern and Pacific times; 9, Central time.
