Glee: Musical Massacre Dominates iTunes!

glee musical massacre itunesThe musical massacre of a show Glee continues to dominate iTunes.

When it comes to selling downloads on iTunes it seems like Glee‘s major competition is . . . well, Glee. This week the Glee cast’s version of Katy Perry‘s hit song “Teenage Dream” hit iTunes and is expected to sell between 150,000 and 175,000 downloads in its first week available. Glee has always sold well, but it seems like lately they have simply taken over control of the digital charts.

As of this writing the Glee cast owns four of the top 20 spots on the Itunes Singles Charts. Joining “Teenage Dream” is “Start Me Up/Livin’ on a Prayer” at #9, “Stop in the Name of Love/Free Your Mind” at #16 and “One Love” at #17. All of these songs were from the current episode of the TV show and you can count on at least a few from next week’s episode charting as well so it is possible that Glee will knock Glee out of the top spot. This has become the norm. People watch the show, then download the song.

What is interesting is that the Glee phenomenon doesn’t seem to reignite any real interest in the original song. Often times a popular cover of a song will drive some listeners to seek out the original version of the song. That is not the case here. The only one of the originals covered this week that is in the charts is Katy Perry with “Teenage Dream” at #19, but she was doing well in the charts with that song prior to the Glee cover ever coming out.

As if the song releases weren’t proof enough, Glee also sells well on the TV chart. The current episode of the show “Never Been Kissed” is the #1 most downloaded TV show on iTunes. Every episode of Glee from this season is still in the #50 on the TV charts as well. Their TV soundtrack album is also currently at #9 on the album charts even though it has been out for a while now and their soundtrack to the Rocky Horror Glee Show is at #23.

Glee’s dominance shows no sign of slowing down. While the TV show has seen a small slip in the ratings they clearly still have a very loyal fan base that has a voracious appetite for the music of Glee.  It wasn’t too long ago that the cast of Glee passed the Beatles as the duo/group with the most songs ever on the Billboard charts. It won’t be long until they take out Elvis who holds the all time record. Chances are Glee will dethrone him by the end of this season and their dominance of Earth will be complete.

Next up. . . Glee invades Mars.
