Fergie was announced as Woman of the Year for 2010 by Billboard.
Billboard announced today that Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie will be named their Woman of the Year for 2010 at the Billboard Women in Music Event to be held on December 2nd in New York. This year the Black Eyed Peas made Billboard history as they set the record for the longest streak of consecutive weeks at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their single “Boom Boom Pow” spent 12 weeks at #1 and “I Gotta Feeling” spent 14 weeks at #1. “I Gotta Feeling” has also become the best-selling digital song in Nielsen SoundScan history.
Of the award Fergie said, “I am humbled and excited to accept the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. Being honored by Billboard is a great career achievement.”
Fergie has been in public eye as a musician since she was a little kid. She did voice over work for cartoons including a couple of Peanuts movies and then joined the kids TV show Kids Incorporated. From there she and one of her Kids Incorporated cast-mates started the girl group Wild Orchid. The group had some success and a few hit songs. During her time with the band Fergie developed an addiction to crystal meth. After leaving Wild Orchid in 2001 she got treatment for her addiction. In 2002 she joined the Black Eyed Peas. The Peas were already an established band but will.i.am wanted a different sound for one song so he invited her to come in and give it a try singing on the track “Shut Up.” The band loved her sound, she instantly bonded with them and she ended up singing on five other tracks on that album. Shortly before that album came out she was invited to join the band full time.
Fergie is married to actor Josh Duhamel and is active in her work for breast cancer awareness as well as other charities Past winners of the Billboard Woman of the Year are Beyonce, Ciara and Reba McEntire.
