2010 American Music Awards: Lady Gaga Trumped By Eminem and Justin Bieber
2010 has been the year of Lady Gaga. She has scoured the globe with one of the biggest, most successful concert tours of the year. Her records are still selling well (her album The Fame just passed its 100th week on the charts), her videos are blowing up YouTube, she was just named the 7th most powerful woman on the planet by Forbes and earlier this year she was the biggest winner in the history of the VMA‘s when she took home eight awards. She has over 20 million friends on Facebook and is the number one most followed person on Twitter. But when it comes to the American Music Awards she got crushed by a veteran rapper (Eminem) and a kid who isn’t old enough to vote (Justin Bieber).
Lady Gaga received two American Music Award nominations today for Favorite Female Artist, Pop or Rock and Artist of the Year. Her two nominations fall short behind Justin Bieber‘s four nominations and Eminem‘s five nominations.
This is the first time in a long time that we have seen anything or anyone slow down the mighty juggernaut that is Lady Gaga. The two awards she is up for are big awards. She should win Favorite Female Artist, Pop or Rock where her competition is Katy Perry and Ke$ha. She faces off against Justin Bieber, Eminem, Ke$ha and Katy Perry for Artist of the Year. That one could be tough. It should go to her or Eminem but Bieber has a ton of fans that have nothing better to do than figure out how to vote for him so he could win it as well. The real question is what the hell is Ke$ha doing in any of these categories? I understand that these awards are based on radio and video play as well as Internet buzz and other factors. They are basically a popularity contest, but the fact that she is that popular really troubles me.
In addition to Artist of the Year, Eminem is also nominated for Favorite Male Artist: Pop or Rock, Favorite Album: Pop or Rock and Favorite Male Artist: Rap/Hip Hop. These nominations solidify the fact that Eminem has successfully pulled off one of the best comebacks in the recent times. When most artists see their sales start to fall they change things up and try to reinvent themselves and it never works. Once it goes bad in the music business, it is almost impossible to turn around and it is only a question of how long you can hang on until you disappear. Eminem put out a couple of not very good records, took time off and even considered retiring. With “Recovery” and the success it has had, he has announced that he is back and still a force to be reckoned with. He did it not by reinventing himself, but by going back to his roots and showing himself in the songs. Few artists turn the knife on themselves like Eminem and clearly that is what the public wanted. It will be interesting to see if he can keep this momentum going from here on out, or if this is one last flash in the pan and one last shot of glory before he fades away.
