Storage Hunters star Jesse McClure was travelling through the northern English town of Burnley on his way to a charity event when he came across Mark Devlin, a 39-year-old car thief, who was racing away from police with passenger Stephen Starkie, who’s 42. The pair were escaping in a Vauxhall Zafira, which had been stolen.

When police were able to box in the runaway car, McClure filmed the whole arrest on his cellphone, and uploaded a 92-second clip on to YouTube. It’s already been viewed more than a million times.

Devlin, who has a history of crime and drug addiction, was jailed for a year and banned from driving for two. Starkie admitted letting himself be carried in a car taken without consent, and was given a four week curfew and fined.

For his part, MClure said: “It was impressive to see this resolved peacefully. This was a moment to commend the police, not condemn them. Though it wasn’t really what I expected when I came to Burnley!”

His comments led to an invitation to go and meet the local chief inspector of police and receive a police hat signed by all those involved in the chase.
