The singer and model died early on Saturday morning, a year after a diagnosis of endometrial cancer.
On her Facebook page, a message from her family read: “With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne.
“Since her diagnosis, she chose to be a fighter and share her journey with the world. Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken through every obstacle she encountered. We know her spirit still shines.”
Borgella became famous as a contestant on crooning show American Idol in 2008, finishing in the top 24 in what was Season 7. She then appeared in other shows including MADE, Mo’Niques-Fat Chance and Curvy Girls.
