“Cops” Crew Member Killed in Police Shooting
A member of the crew on long-running TV reality show Cops has been shot dead after police offers who were being filmed for it fired when they were called to an armed robbery at a fast-food restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska. The key suspect in the robbery was killed at the same time.
Bryce Dion, who was 38 and from Boston was the first crew-member of the well-established show to be killed as he filmed cops in action, say the production company’s executives.
Officers returned fire after the suspect, who has since been identified as Cortez Washington, 32, shot from a pellet gun, a media conference heard.
In fact the suspect’s gun only fired plastic pellets, but officers and witnesses thought the handgun sounded and looked real.
And although Dion had a bullet proof vest on, one bullet that struck an arm managed to slip into a gap in the vest and enter his chest.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said: “My officers are taking this very hard.”
Cops has been on our screens for 25 years, and filming has taken place in three overseas countries as well as at least 140 cities across the U.S.
