Can American Idol Climb Out of Ratings Slump?

Posted by on May 8, 2013 at 5:02 AM EST

We hate to report it, but it seems that American Idol has hit a bit of a ratings slump – and it remains to be seen whether Fox’s hit reality singing contest can find a way out.

Last week, with a mere 11 million viewers, Season 12 had fallen 7% from the previous week.

The show’s woes have given rise to rumors that this week’s showdown between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj (a whole other story!) were a desperate publicity stunt.

And there are other rumors circulating of new judges, including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez. Could these also be frantic attempts to crank up the ailing ratings?

The show, in which viewers vote for the winners, which has launched the careers of the likes of Jennifer Hudson, has been going since June 2002. Between the 2003-4 and 2010-11 seasons, it consistently achieved high rankings.

How the mighty are fallen! We’ll still be watching it though – are you?
