Breaking News: Breaking Amish to Hit TV Screens
Having focused its searchlight on gypsies, tiara-wearing toddlers and polygamists, TLC is turning its attention to another group: the Amish and Mennonite communities.
The show, which premieres next month, captures the lives of five Amish, aged between 20 and 32, as they swap rural Pennsylvania for the mean streets of New York City.
There’s an Amish tradition of Rumspringa, which allows teenagers in the community to experience life outside the church at around age 16, but this goes way beyond that, involving an adult decision to leave behind the only life they’ve ever known – potentially permanently.
Those we meet include Sabrina, 26 and the only Mennonite member of the cast, and Kate, who is 21, the daughter of a bishop, and who has big dreams of one day becoming a model.
While Sabrina says: “All I knew about New York was that it was a city, I had no idea it was that big! It was overwhelming.”
For her part, Kate comments: “I wanted to go because it had so many opportunities, and I wanted to find out what was there.”
- Breaking Amish kicks off its season of nine hour-long episodes on Sunday September 09, 10pm ET on TLC
