mir-cro-cop-ufc-119UFC 119 Frank Mir vs Cro Cop could be a close one, but Mir is favored say odds makers.

UFC 119 could be a night of redemption for Frank Mir and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović. The odds makers have Mir as a slight favorite, but both men want this desperately. Mir was supposed to face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event, but Nogueira had to pull out five weeks ago with an injured hip. Filipović, who was on vacation with his family was offered the fight and jumped at it.

The main event in UFC 119 offers both fighters the opportunity to show the world that they are still at the top of their game and are still elite fighters. Both have suffered recent setbacks and have not performed as well as they would have liked.

After beating Brock Lesnar in February of 2008 then following it up with a second round knockout of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mir was poised to take his seat at the top of the UFC Heavyweight division. But Lesnar beat him in a rematch to claim the UFC Heavyweight title. Mir made a strong comeback with a first round submission of Chieck Congo only to then lose the interim Heavyweight title to match to Shane Carwin. Tonight’s fight was supposed to be a rematch with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but in Cro Cop he faces a dangerous striker who is also looking for redemption.

Cro Cop was one of the hottest fighters in the world. From 2004-2007 he went 13-2. His only loses were a split decision to Mark Hunt and a decision loss to Fedor Emelianenko. His quick hands and leg strikes had turned him into a folk hero of sorts in Pride. His much talked about arrival in the UFC started with fireworks when he knocked out Eddie Sanchez in the first round. Then things went off the rails. Gabriel Gonzaga used his own trick against him and with one shot knocked Cro Cop out with a head kick. A follow up loss to Chieck Congo sent him reeling. He took a few fights in Japan before returning to the UFC. Since his return he has gone 3-1. His only loss came due to a freak eye injury he suffered in the 3rd and final round of his fight against Junior dos Santos.

As Frank Mir and Cro Cop step into the ring tonight in UFC 119, they both look to show that they are still elite fighters. They both want to show that they have what it takes to not only headline a major card, but they both want to show that they are worthy of another shot at Brock Lesnar.

Frank Mir enters the ring as the favorite and Cro Cop suffered a minor eye injury at the end of his whirlwind training camp, but you can still expect this to be a close fight with two guys desperate to hang on to the glory they have worked so hard to achieve. The winner could be in line for a shot at the title sometime in the near future. The loser just may find themselves having to make some hard decisions about their future.
