Warhammer 40k: Space Marine Combat Video

A new video has just come out detailing the combat engine in the newest addition to the Warhammer 40,000 video game universe creatively titled Space Marine developed by THQ.

If you aren’t familiar with the Warhammer 40k universe it’s based upon an old tabletop Dungeons and Dragons type game that pits a religious type military organization called the Space Marines who worship a god like Emperor and face off against an entire universe of hostile inhabitants. In Warhammer 40k: Space Marines, you face off against Orks and other Space Marines possessed by the evil forces of Chaos.

From the looks of the video this is gonna be a really bloody 3rd person Gears of War look alike with Orks replacing the usual locust horde. The difference being an emphasis on melee combat and not cowering behind cover when the green mess of Orks comes lumbering your way. There will be plenty of ultraviolence in the form of gorey animations. One of the main Space Marine weapons is a chainsaw sword and as silly as it sounds makes for a giant bloody mess on the battlefield.

The release date for Space Marine has been pushed back a few times but now is tentatively scheduled for a release date on September 6, 2011. As usual you can  buy versions with lots of extra trinkets and clever sounding names like “Space Marine Edition” which include stuff like a 10 in purity seal to show all your friends how much you love the Emperor.  It also comes with a hardback book, soundtrack and playing cards so if anyone wasn’t sure how big of a nerd you were they will be once they see all that stuff.

Things seem to be coming together quite nicely though so hopefully this will be the first of many THQ  Space Marine games in the Warhammer Universe. Only the Emperor knows for sure. Check out the gorey combat video below and let us know what you think in the comments!
