Johnny Depp Flirting with Overkill?
Actor Johnny Depp has, in recent years, developed a reputation for picking zany, crazy roles. Such movies have included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. But as Johnny Depp considers starring in yet another Pirates of the Caribbean flick, it begs the question…why is Johnny Depp playing these same quirky characters? Has he burned out as an actor, or is he merely trying to make as much money as possible, without concern for artistic integrity?
My words are harsh, yes. But I used to love Johnny Depp, back in the days of Edward Scissorhands…when he showed his ability to play an unconventional character, but without stumbling into caricature. His acting then was subtle, artful. What would Edward Scissorhands be like if Johnny Depp had attempted to convey him as flamboyant, and over the top?
Perhaps I’m being too critical. What do you think? What was the last great movie Johnny Depp starred in? Usually, films like Pirates of the Caribbean are confined to a trilogy…but Captain Jack Sparrow has already starred in 4 Pirates films, and word on the street is that Johnny Depp may set sail in yet another in the series.
And in Johnny Depp’s own words, “I don’t feel like I could ever be done with Jack Sparrow. I feel like there will always be more possibilities and more trouble he could get into; more irreverence and more absurdity. I’d be done with him only in the sense that if they ever say we’re done making the movies.”
