American Idol 2011: Scotty McCreery vs. James Durbin
It is down to the final 4 on American Idol with two guys (Scotty McCreery, James Durbin) and two girls left. There is a nice mix of styles among the four and what seem to be four really different personalities. At this point I think you could make a case for any of them to win, but here let’s focus on the two remaining guys.
Scotty McCreery has been a fan favorite since the start of the competition. From the minute he stepped in front of the judged with his deep voice, easy charm and vocal honesty he has been a front runner. He has more Twitter followers than any other contestant. He has never been in the bottom three vote getters and it seems like the crowd loves him. I think he would have to make a major mistake tonight in order to not make it into the final three. Regardless of if he makes it another day on the show there is a very good chance he will have a successful career after the show in country music.
James Durbin has been this year’s high energy guy. Like Scotty James has never been to the bottom three and he seems to be getting better and better with each passing week. Early on it seemed as if James relied too much on his high pitched banshee wail when he sang. It was almost as if he were performing the song as a means to getting to that last big note. Now he has reined it in some. He now understands that he has that note and he can go to it when he needs it, but he realizes he can’t use it all the time or he will wear out the welcome. He has also figured out that sometimes less is more and that he can pull back and be quiet and still be powerful. I have said for the last few weeks that I think James will be this year’s winner and still feel that way.
Anything could happen on American Idol. At this point it is clearly a popularity contest and Scotty McCreery and James Durbin are both very popular. I will not be at all shocked to see these two side by side as the final two singers left on American Idol.
