something borrowedGear up for one hell of a box office weekend as we break down the new releases hitting theaters today. (May 6 2011)

It’s an exciting time in terms of big box offices releases this weekend. Firstly well talk about the latest of the Marvel comic adaptations, Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Next we’ll take a look at “The Beaver” (Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster) and then finally we will examine “Something Borrowed.” (Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, John Krasinski)

Thor is the latest in the series of Marvel comic book heroes to be brought to the big screen. For those of you who aren’t into comic books, Thor, (Chris Hemsworth) tells the story of the Norse god of thunder, who, after a tantrum of mythological proportions, is banished from Asgard (heaven) by his father Odin. Stripped of most of his powers, Thor crashlands into the present day Mexican desert, or more specifically, Area 51. Due to his previous actions, Thor has to protect the human world from the now vengeful Frost Giants. If you like your films on an epic scale, over the top and action packed then you won’t find much better than this right now.

The Beaver tells the story of a successful, but clinically depressed father, (Mel Gibson) who after a failed suicidal experience begins communicating through a stuffed beaver with a Cockney accent. Whilst this premise may seem slightly ridiculous, The Beaver is a film that delivers its comedy with a slice of emotion. Films about mental illness are rare in mainstream American cinema, making The Beaver definitely one to look out for.

Finally, Something Borrowed is a film about a young female’s lawyer, (Ginnifer Goodwin) who after her 30th birthday finally finds herself in the arms of her schoolyard crush….who just happens to be her best friends (played by Kate Hudson) fiancé. Expect drama in full force from this tale of forbidden love.

What new films will you be looking forward to catching this weekend?
