American Idol 2011: James Durbin, Haley Reinhart Final Two!
With just five contestants left the competition is getting fierce on American Idol. Last night was Then/Now week where the contestants sing a current song then sing a song that was a hit in the 60’s or 70’s. As you might expect some singers did better than others. Here are this week’s American Idol Winners.
Last night was Haley Reinhart’s coming out party. Her first song, an unreleased track from Lady Gaga, was good, but not great. The judges still make me laugh because one week they tell the contestants to take chances and then when they do they tell them it was too risky. She did the song well, but as was pointed out most people don’t know the song so they had no point of reference. I actually think that helped her out because she could really make the song her own. But it didn’t really matter. Her version of “House of the Rising Sun” brought the house down and brought everyone, the judges included, to their feet. That is the kind of performance that could carry her to the finals.
James Durbin was solid as usual in his first song “Closer to the Edge.” He wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad either. Like Haley he came out with fire on his second song “Without You.” He broke down during rehearsals because the song reminds him of his family. During the performance he held it together until the last moment then lost it as the song came to an end. It was emotional and powerful. It wasn’t the best performance he has ever done, but it was pretty moving. It isn’t every day you see someone expose themselves in raw emotion like that on national TV.
Most of the rest of the cast of American Idol did well. They were solid, but not magnificent. I would guess that Haley and James Durbin will be safe this week, but with only five singers left you never know what is going to happen. Tune in tonight at 8PM on Fox to find out who goes home.
