2011 NFL Draft Lockout Madness

cam newtonTonight the 2011 NFL draft will get underway despite the looming NFL lockout.

The NFL draft is getting underway tonight in the shadow of an uncertain NFL season. The NFL players and owners are battling it out in court over the future of the union and the profit sharing in the league. There was a lockout which was lifted this week, but being appealed. While things appear to be moving forward, there is no guarantee that there will even be a season next years.

That will not stop the NFL draft from happening. Tonight is the first round with the 2nd and 3rd rounds happening tomorrow and rounds 4-7 happening Saturday. This is one of those odd seasons where there is no clear cut #1 pick so we could see some trades as teams move up and down in the draft trying to find the right spot to get that pick that best fills their needs.

Among the players expected to go very early in the 2011 NFL Draft are Alabama DT Marcell Dareus, Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, Georgia WR A.J. Green and Missouri QB Blain Gabbert. Heisman trophy winner and QB of the National Champion  Auburn Tigers Cam Newton is expected to go in the first round, but experts expect that he won’t go until the middle of the round. The option style offense that Auburn ran often doesn’t translate well to the NFL game so there could be some worries there.

The Carolina Panthers have the #1 overall NFL draft pick followed by the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals rounding out the top five. All of these teams have a lot of holes to fill so just about any of the top ranked players could help them out. I have a feeling we will see teams making trades as they try to get the best possible player, but still avoid having to pay him the big money that comes with being a top 5 pick.

The NFL draft starts tonight at 8PM EST on ESPN. Tune in to see who your team picks in the first round.
