American Idol 2011: Scotty McCreery Shines, James Durbin Wins
Last night was a somewhat strange night on American Idol. It was Carole King night and while she has a lot of hit songs they aren’t the types of songs that really fit the Top 6. As you might expect some did better (Scotty McCreery, James Durbin, Casey Abrams) than others. Here are my choices for last night American Idol Winners.
Scotty McCreery showed off a little different side of himself. He took the criticism he got last week to heart and also took the suggestions of Jimmy Iovine and Babyface during his rehearsals and put together a powerful, emotional performance of “You’ve Got A Friend” that showed he can do more than just rock the deep notes.
Casey Abrams had a moment during rehearsals that must have been a musicians dream as he jammed with Babyface and Don Was while practicing his song “Hi De Ho.” Casey’s live performance was a wild, jazz infused revival of a performance that showed that he is really the only contestant left who is willing to take a chance. He also showed he can make anything interesting.
While Scotty McCreery and Casey Abrams did well, James Durbin once again stole the show. They could put an end to all of this and just crown James this season’s American Idol now and I think very few people would have a problem with it. His version of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” started off quiet then he kicked in the rock guitar and made it a power ballad with his voice soaring above it. His duet later on in the show with Jacob was ridiculous and a mess, but you might expect that and it doesn’t detract from the amazing night he had otherwise. Make no mistake about it; James Durbin is the guy to beat in this competition.
Tune in tonight at 8PM on Fox to see which of the TOP 6 is eliminated tonight on American Idol.
