Box Office Preview: Water for Elephants versus Madea

madeas big happy familyWill Tyler Perry’s new Madea flick be enough to douse Resee Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson’s fiery performances in Water for Elephants?

Going to the movies this weekend?  Are you planning to see one of the new releases (Madea’s Big Happy Family, Water for Elephants, African Cats)?  With Good Friday, and Easter occurring this weekend, wonder how much that will hurt the box office?  Let’s review.

Madea’s Big Happy Family is being released this weekend.  (By the way, I love the Brady Bunch inspired movie poster!).  This is Tyler Perry’s tenth film in five years.  He’s had success with two other Madea films.  Madea Goes to Jail made $41 million in it’s opening weekend, and Madea’s Family Reunion made $30 million in it’s opening weekend.

Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson’s movie Water for Elephants is released today as well.  The movie, which is based on a best-selling novel, is rated PG-13.  This will surely be a female audience, but could vary in the age range given the stars of the show.  The movie has received bad reviews, but there isn’t much competition out there for a female audience.  Those who read the book, and have read the reviews may not be apt to purchasing a ticket this holiday weekend.

This Earth Day marks the third straight year the Disneynature has lined up a documentary for release.  This year they are offering African Cats which is a G-rated movie, and good for the entire family.  Samuel L. Jackson narrates.  It also helps that proceeds from sales during the first week of release for the movie will be donated to environmental charities.

Will you be going to the movies?  Post a comment on which movie you plan on seeing this weekend.
