American Idol 2011 Cast Offs Return

thia megiaUnlike past seasons where they have been exiled, the American Idol cast offs returned to the show last night and performed during the top 7 performance show.

There has been a sea change this season on American Idol. Along with two new judges (Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez), some changes with how they did the selection process and different options for the contestants and their performances we have also seen a change in how those who are voted out of the show are treated.

In the past it was simple. If you were voted out of American Idol you were gone. It was like you were in witness protection. They might bring you back at the end of the season and let you stand on the side of the stage or show you in some clips, but basically you were a thing of the past. And they surely didn’t want you to perform or do anything that might show up the remaining contestants. This season, however, this just isn’t the case.

Last night we saw the six singers who have been voted out of the American Idol Top 13 come back and do an ensemble version of Pink’s “So What (I’m Still a Rock Star).” The performance was interesting and uneven at times. At first the five girls voted out: Thia Megia, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Karen Rodriguez and Pia Toscano hit the stage like a hurricane. Dressed all in black the girls looked hot, strutted around and gave the song plenty of attitude. Then the sole guy among the six, Paul McDonald showed up in a flowery, flame licked suit and threw the whole thing off. He has a cool voice; it just wasn’t meant for group harmonies. When they were done the judges said it best when they pointed out that the performance should make people rethink having voted them out. Call me crazy, but those five girls could be a group.

But this isn’t the only case of the voted out returning from the dead. Pia Toscano (who is rumored to be dating Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas – who also happened to be in the audience this week) will be performing live on Dancing with the Stars and will be accompanied by Ballas and fellow pro Karina Smirnoff as they dance backup for her.

In the past this kind of thing was unheard of on Idol. They also had a rule that nobody could release a record until the winner released theirs. Rumors are that Pia has already signed and is starting work on a record very soon.

So it looks like American Idol is putting their cast offs to work. I think part of it may be to remind people that these singers are still out there and that several of them will be on the tour that will hit the road once the show has ended. I think it is a change for the better. There is a reason these people made it to the top 13 to start with. They have talent. The show might as well use that while they can.
