American Idol 2011: James Durbin, Casey Abrams in the 21st Century

casey abrams top 7James Durbin and Casey Abrams perform live tonight as the American Idol final 7 take on the 21st century.

Casey Abrams has had one of the great redemptions in the history of American Idol. Not since Clay Aiken was picked as a last minute wildcard and finished second has a contestant done so much with their second chance. When Casey was saved by the judges he swore he would make them proud and he has. Each week he has impressed the crowd leading up to last week’s amazing, jazzy version of “Nature Boy” that wowed the audience and floored the judges. Meanwhile James Durbin and been slowly getting louder and louder with his rock songs until last week’s full on metal attack complete with Zakk Wylde on guitar.

This week is the Top 7 can pick songs from the 21st century. That really opens things up and makes for a wide range of options.  I would like to see Casey Abrams do something a little more rock n roll this week. He showed us he can be slow and powerful, now he can crank it up and have some fun. “Wonderful” by Everclear might be a perfect option for Casey. Nobody is safe at this point in the competition so he will need to do well, but that doesn’t mean he can’t take risks. I have to admit Casey is the only one I really look forward to each week to see what trick he is going to pull out of his hat.

James Durbin has taken the mantel of this year’s rock guy and he had ridden out. Last week’s “Heavy Metal” performance was inspired and fun. Nobody doubts that James can sing, he has a powerful voice and can hammer the high notes as needed. The last few weeks he has gotten the big screams under control and it has really helped him show the real power of his voice. I would like to see him stick with the rock theme this week, but slow it down. For me “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day would be a perfect choice for James.

Barring a major flop by either of these guys I think they will both likely move on to the Top 6, but you never know. There have been plenty of surprises and Casey Abrams has already been voted out once. I look for both of these guys to do very well this week and show why they deserve to move on. Tune in tonight at 8PM on FOX to see Casey Abrams, James Durbin and the rest of the Top 7 perform live.
