Ashley Kauffman: American Idol & FOX Hate Fat Girls!
Ashley Kauffman claims that the people at American Idol & FOX hate fat girls.
It has always been safe to assume that American Idol producers work hard with the contestants on their look. They have access to extensive wardrobes, stylists, make-up and hair. Having the right look in the music industry can be just as important as having the right song. It also looks like the American Idol producers want to control the look of the audience because they recently told a fan she could not sit in the front row of the auditorium because she was too fat.
19-year-old Ashley Kauffman and her friends got free tickets to the live performance show of American Idol. The girls got there early and made their way down to the front row where they encountered a producer (female) who told Kauffman that she was “too big, too heavy to be in front.” Kauffman and one of her friends who were told that they didn’t allow anyone wearing shorts in the front row were led to the back row of the auditorium. The two tried to sneak back up to sit in the second row behind their other three friends (who were deemed skinny enough for the front row) only to be stopped by another Idol staffer (a man this time) who looked at her tickets and then at her and said to her: “This makes sense why you’re not with the skinny girls. You’re in the last row.” Kauffman then noticed that the seats they were originally sitting in were now taken by very skinny girls in very short skirts.
Ashley Kauffman is 5’2” tall and weighs around 150lbs. She says she put on weight due to some medical problems she had recently. A doctor prescribed her a medicine that has weight gain as a side effect. She goes on to say that the only person who apologized to her for moving her to the back was the usher who didn’t seem surprised at what he was seeing.
Kauffman’s story is an interesting juxtaposition in the American Idol universe. Lauren Alaina is clearly overweight yet it seems like each week the judges make a point of telling her that she looks beautiful. When you see a picture of Ashley Kauffman next to Lauren the two could be sisters which means that Lauren, were she just a fan, would not be allowed to sit in the front row. In the past Simon Cowell used to tell the contestants that they needed to lose weight and get in better shape. He was right. In the world of pop music looks are very important. He caught a lot of flax for that and eventually stopped doing it. So it looks like Idol is both trying to seem accepting and trying to sell us on the “reality” that it is all about the voice and the ability to perform all the while they are working hard to make sure that the crowd is as visually pleasing as possible. I would assume they also talk to the contestants about weight and fitness behind the scenes as if it were some kind of top secret thing that most successful pop stars are thin, fit and sexy.
In the end Ashley Kauffman says she is still a fan of the show and that she won’t hold the actions of those in charge of putting the audience together against the contestants. Her favorite contestant was Pia Toscano who was just voted off the show last week, but it sounds like Kauffman will continue to support the others she likes and watch the show.
American Idol producers have not commented on Ashley Kauffman’s story.
