Kurt Cobain Changed My Life
Today I remember Kurt Cobain and how he forever changed my life.
I received my first Nirvana CD when I was 13 years old. I was in the first stages of what I later recognized as a hormonally-induced fever of teenage rebellion, and upon hearing Kurt Cobain’s lyrics, and gravelly voice, I felt a little less alone.
By this time, Kurt Cobain had long since passed away. I was only five years old when Kurt committed suicide, and I have no memory of it whatsoever. Later, when I started obsessing over Nirvana and plastering magazine photos on my walls of the trio, I would try to envision what Kurt Cobain went through, and how he had suffered in his last years of life.
By the time I was 15, I had surrounded myself with people who had similar music taste, and similar angst. My friends would cynically proclaim that it was for the best that Kurt Cobain had died. He had died whilst he was at the apex of his career; if he didn’t kill himself he would have just gone on to become another washed up musician who produced meaningless drivel. “It’s better to burn out than to fade away,” and all that jazz.
But I knew better. I fantasized about going back in time and stopping him, reminding him of Frances Bean, his fans, his friends. He was so young…
Today marks the seventeenth anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. I haven’t read what anyone else has written on it, as I thought I should just write from the heart, and write about my personal experience and how my life has been impacted by Kurt Cobain. Nirvana helped me get through so many nights. The music inspired me to pick up a guitar, to find people with similar feelings, to connect.
What’s done is done, and there is no changing the past. But I am certain that Kurt Cobain’s music continues to change lives. I know it does, because it changed my life, and I first heard Nirvana 8 years after Kurt Cobain died. Rest in peace, Kurt.
