ACM Awards 2011: Will Taylor Swift Win?
Will Taylor Swift win Top Female Vocalist at tonight’s 2011 ACM Awards?
Tonight the ACM Awards 2011 (Academy of Country Music) airs live and there are several very interesting, highly competitive categories. One of those categories is Top Female Vocalist of the Year. The nominees are: Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Lee Ann Womack.
Miranda Lambert is one of the hottest names in country music right now and the fact that she is nominated for this award even though her last album was released in 2009 is a testament to her popularity. Earlier this year she won a Grammy Award and she is the current reigning champ in this category. She is in a very good place to repeat as winner in this category at the ACM Awards 2011.
Reba McEntire is the veteran of this group. Her debut album came out in 1977 which is before three of the nominees were even born. Her most recent album spawned a #1 hit song “Turn On the Radio” which was just covered by a contestant on American Idol and the album itself peaked at #3 on the country chart and #7 on the Billboard 200 chart proving that she still has plenty of star power.
Speaking of American Idol, Carrie Underwood is a two time winner of this award and is in the middle of a successful tour and her most recent album has sold more than 3 million copies in the US and Canada. She is set to make her big screen debut in the movie Soul Surfer which comes out later this year. Carrie is strong competition in this ACM Awards 2011 category and very well could be the winner.
If it were any other awards show I would say this is Taylor Swift’s award to lose. She has the biggest record of the year (not just country record, but the biggest selling record of the year period). Her tour is sold out and will scour the globe and she is simply one of the biggest names in music. But she didn’t win last year and for the most part has been shut out at the ACM’s. I have the feeling that the panel that chooses the winners feels she is too pop and not enough country. Regardless, you can never count her out so this might be her year.
Lee Ann Womack is somewhat of a surprise nominee in this category. She hasn’t had a record out since 2008, but she did contribute the song “Liars Lie” to the soundtrack for the movie Country Strong which has helped put her back on the map. She is probably a longshot to win this award, but you never know.
My prediction is that that Miranda Lambert will win this award again. She seems to be the girl a lot of people are talking about and I think they want to give it to someone they see as more a country artist than a pop artist. You can tune in at 8PM on CBS to see the full ACM Awards 2011 broadcast and find out if I was right.
