It is easy to say that this year the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has been the year of the Cinderella. This weekend we roll into the Final Four and two of teams still standing are teams few expected to get out of the first round and next to nobody expected to go much further. If you picked Butler and VCU (Virginia Commonwealth) to make it to the final four 2011, go get a lottery ticket, or grab a flight to Vegas and hit the tables because you have magic flowing through your veins.

If there is one downer about the formatting it is that these two Cinderella teams will meet to decide who faces the winner of UConn and Kentucky for the national title. It would have been cool to see them have a chance to play each other for the title, but just the fact that they are both here and alive restates why the March Madness rules and why the NCAA Men’s Tourney Final Four is one of the best, most exciting playoffs in all of sports.

VCU (Virginia Commonwealth) is the lower ranked of the two teams. They come into the game ranked as the 11 team. They beat powerhouse Georgetown in the first round, #3 ranked Purdue in the second round and #10 Florida in the Sweet Sixteen. They saved their biggest shocker for the last when they knocked off #1 seed Kansas (who was favored by many to win it all) in the Elite Eight.

Butler has had a run that was just as amazing. In the first round they took out #9 ODU, which was a pretty even game, but then they knocked out #1Pittsburgh in the second round and #4 Wisconsin in the Sweet Sixteen. They faced #2 Florida in the Elite Eight and dispatched of them. This means that Butler took out three teams ranked in the top 5 to get to the final four.

As great a run as Butler has had, I think VCU will not be denied. They come into the matchup the lower ranked team, but they have not scored less than 70 points in any game so far in the tourney regardless of opponent and they play defense well. They held superstar packed Kanas to just 61 and Georgetown to 56.  I think it will be a close game, Butler is scrappy or they wouldn’t be here, but I think it will be VCU moving on to play for the NCAA national championship.
