American Idol Top 9: Pia Toscano, James Durbin, Casey Abrams
My best three performers from last night who will more than likely make the American Idol Top 9.
Last night on American Idol it was Elton John night and some of the contestants really took it to heart and brought their best. Here are my choices for the three best performers last night. Casey Abrams, Pia Toscano and James Durbin should all ease their way into the American Idol Top 9.
James Durbin. His voice is meant for rock and I actually feel like, in the long run, he will be better off in a band than as a solo act, but last night he really tore it up. He tackled “Friday Night’s Alright for Fighting” and did it with plenty of bravado and a ton of energy. Starting in the crowd then coming down the stairs, running around the stage, into the crowd then climbing on the piano only to jump off of it and have it burst into flame. Durbin seems at home on stage and like he is having fun and last night was one of his best performances of the American Idol 2011 season.
PiaToscano’s take “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” made the judges eat their words. Last week they were all but begging her to do an up tempo piece and she told them that she would, but then set that aside and took on another ballad. After her performance the American Idol judges quickly denied that they wanted her to do something other than a ballad this week. They still said they want to see her do something else, but there was no denying the power she brought this song.
The third winner of the week was Casey Abrams. After being literally saved by the judges last week he came back a more humble, focused singer. It was even suggested that he shave off his beard. He trimmed the beard and got a haircut then knocked out an emotional, powerful version of “Your Song.” He had a lot less growling and antics and a lot more feeling and connection.
There were other contestants that did well this week on American Idol, but these were the three (Casey Abrams, Pia Toscano, James Durbin) that stuck out in my head as the three who did the best. You can tune in tonight at 8PM for what is sure to be an emotion and drama packed double elimination night.
