Top Chef All Stars Recap – Season Finale March 31, 2011
Recap of the Top Chef All Stars Season finale which aired last night on BRAVO.
It’s here! The big battle between Richard Blais and Michael Isabella for the title of “Top Chef All Star” and $200,000 has arrived. Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio lay down the challenge; create the restaurant of your dreams. They get 1 hour to prep the first day and five hours to cook a four course tasting menu for seventy guests plus the judges. Each finalist gets to choose 3 eliminated chefs from this season to be their sous chefs for the “Top Chef” finale. In the past this is usually done playground style and the finalists pick people who will work hard and listen to them. This time, each of the eliminated chefs created an amuse bouche and the finalists had to pick their three favorites in a blind taste test. This obviously takes out their ability to choose who they know and really want. Nobody wants Marcel or Jamie and everybody wants Jen Carroll. Michael ends up picking Tiffany, Jamie, and Carla. Richard gets Angelo, Spike, and Antonia.
Richard Blais named his restaurant Tongue & Cheek, aiming to be whimsy with dishes like Raw Oyster with Lemon Horseradish Ice Cream and Salsa Verde. Restaurant Iz was what Mike named his, and he wanted it to be a reflection of his cooking. A couple dishes from his menu are Halibut with Kumquats Marmalade, Cauliflower Puree, and Pancetta Crumbs and Braised Pork Shoulder with Pepperoni Sauce, Roasted Cabbage, and Turnips. The judges were very impressed with each restaurant’s menu but they did each have problematic desserts. In the end, although it was a hard decision, the judges named Richard Blais Top Chef.
I like Richard but was really rooting for Mike to win Top Chef All Stars. He has really improved from his original season in Las Vegas and Richard already has four restaurants! Oh well, on to Top Chef Masters, which airs Wednesday, April 6th on Bravo at 11/10c.
