MTV Music Video Awards: Drake Long Shot to Win Best Male Video
Drake is such a long shot to win Best Male Video at this weekend’s MTV Music Video Awards that it almost seems like they included the video just so they could fill up the category. This isn’t to say that the video Find Your Love is bad, but is really isn’t anything special. It wants to be a suspense story about a young man trying to free the girl he loves from a gangster. The problem is most of the video is simply close-up shots of Drake singing or hanging out with the girl whom he met at a club. There is no narrative thread to the video. Did he meet her at the club, fall for her then find out she was the property of a gangster and now he can’t be with her? Did she agree to go with him then end up going back to the gangster? Does the gang kill him? More importantly, why would anyone vote for him for Best Male Video?
Bet Drake as the long shot for Best Make Video
Find Your Love is not a bad song, but it is a somewhat pedestrian R&B tune. Drake’s voice is smooth and hypnotic and he finds a groove in the song, but it isn’t anything we haven’t heard before. The same can be said for the music video. It is decent, but it isn’t great and ultimately it lacks heart. We don’t really care about the people in it. It almost seems like an excuse for showing Drake’s handsome face and some nice scenery. When you play it side by side (VMA Best Male Video odds on favorite) Eminem‘s Not Afraid you can see why there is such a disparity in the odds. Drake is a huge long shot to win the Best Male Video at the MTV Music Video Awards simply because both the song and the video are not anywhere in the same league. Drake has a very bright future ahead of him, but come awards night, he really should just take solace in the age old saying that it is ‘an honor just to be nominate’ because it would probably be the upset of the night if he won.
Drake got his start as an actor on the show Degrassi: The Next Generation. He appeared in over 135 episodes of the show then his character graduated and he left the show. After making a movie based on the show Drake began focusing on his music career. He released a mixed tape and started guesting on other people’s tracks. In June 2009 Drake signed with Lil’ Wayne’s record label Young Money Entertainment. His debut album Thank Me Later was released almost exactly one year later. Find Your Love is the second single from the album and has performed well on the charts.
