Dancing With The Stars Season 12 First Impressions
A recap of the Dancing With The Stars Season 12 premiere.
Last night was the premiere of Dancing with the Stars Season 12 and it had a little bit of everything in it. For starters, there is no results show tonight. Instead the dancers will all dance again next week then the votes from this week and next week, along with the DWTS judge’s scores for both will be used next week to see who the first person voted out is.
Chelsea Kane got the unfortunate spot of being the first person to perform and she was solid. She joked that she was home schooled and never got to have a romantic dance with a guy so this was like her prom. She is cute, has a good personality and seems to have plenty of chemistry with her partner Mark Ballas. She got a 21 from the Dancing With The Stars judges for her fun Foxtrot.
Wendy Williams cried through her rehearsals and struggled badly to get the steps and find some confidence. Tony Dovolani tried to help her, but she seemed like a nervous wreck and it showed on the dance floor. She didn’t do well at all and only got a 14 for her slow, messy Cha Cha.
Hines Ward was up next and continued the tradition of football players doing well on DWTS. He was a little stiff, but otherwise hit all the marks, did a good job on his Cha Cha and he and partner Kym Johnson were rewarded with a 21.
After an emotional introduction as we learned about Petra Nemcova’s story of surviving the 2004 tsunami we find out in rehearsals with her partner Dmitry Chaplin that her hips still have issues so moving could be a problem. He works with her and the put together a graceful, elegant Foxtrot. The Dancing With The Stars Season 12 judges seemed to like her, but only gave her 18 points.
Next up was Romeo whose father Master P is notorious on DWTS for having the lowest score ever and for being the guy who clearly didn’t try or care. They didn’t let Romeo forget it either. He and Chelsie Hightower had fun in rehearsals and he did a pretty good. Redemption for his family might be in order as he got a 19 from the judges.
Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and Anna Trebunsakaya hit the floor next with a Foxtrot. Leonard had some issues during rehearsals, but he seemed to find his footing and they did pretty good. They got a 17 which puts him right in the middle of the pack.
Many people expect Kendra Wilkinson to be there in the end and think she is one of the favorites, but she had some issues. She admitted that dancing like a stripper and ball room dancing were two different things. Still, she snuck a few of her trademark booty shakes into her first DWTS routine and got a solid 18.
The surprise of the night was Ralph Macchio and his partner Karina Smirnoff. Judging by the rehearsal footage you were braced for something pretty bad, but Ralph hit the floor with his A game and their Foxtrot blew everyone away earning them the top score of 24. The Karate Kid looks like he is going to make some noise on Dancing with the Stars.
Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke were up next and Cheryl said that the hardest thing for her to deal with was that he was so muscular she had issues getting the lines of the dance correct. They did a Cha Cha that was decent, but not great and were rewarded with a 19.
The unknown guy Mike Catherwood and Lacey Schwimmer were next in line and he clearly wants to be the funny guy. He has never danced before so they were starting from scratch and it showed. Their Cha Cha was all over the place and got a 13 which landed them in last place.
Last up was Kirstie Alley. Nobody really knew what to expect. Not only is she the oldest competitor at 60 she is also out of shape and has a reputation for being difficult. Add in that her partner is taskmaster Maksim Chmerkovskiy and it could be recipe for fire. However, she impressed in rehearsals, worked hard and kept her sense of humor about it all. When they hit the floor for their Cha Cha it was actually impressive. She moved well and they put on a great show that got them a 23 and brought the room to its feet.
After one week it is clear that there are a few people on DWTS like Wendy and Mike that need to improve fast or they will likely be gone. Kirstie and Ralph came out of nowhere to impress and there was a lot of average dancing. All in all it was a good start to Dancing with the Stars Season 12 that could be a lot of fun.
