American Idol’s Best And Worst Men

american- idol casey abramsLast night American Idol had its first ever live broadcast of the performers and with it we saw some good, some bad and some just plain bizarre. Think names like Scotty McCreery, Casey Abrams, Jacob Lusk, and Stefano Langone when you think good and bad.  Here are my picks for the two best and two worst guys from last night’s AI.

American Idol’s Best Men:

For me it was pretty clear which were the two best guys. Scotty McCreery scored again as he did a Travis Tritt song. We got to learn about Scotty’s obsession at a young age with Elvis and I would love to see him do an Elvis song at some point during the competition. He stayed in his comfort zone and did what he does best. I think it is the smart thing to do. Scotty McCreery knows who he is and should be able to take any song he wants and make it sound like his.

The other winner, and it pains me to say this, was Stefano Langone. Now this isn’t saying much. I think, for the most part, the guys of American Idol were pretty bad so saying Sefano was one of the best guys is kind of like saying that once you stop hitting yourself in the head with a hammer it feels pretty good. At least he had a funny moment during his intro where he jokingly said he was going to sing Tone Loc or Mili Vanilli. I wish you would have Mr. Stefano Langone!

American Idol’s Worst Men:

I have been a fan of Casey Abrams since early on in the competition, but last night was just not his night. He chose to do Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and while I give him props for playing the bass and taking a chance, it was pretty bad. It started off slow and odd then moved into bizarre as he started screaming. That is one of the most iconic songs in rock history from one of the most distinct sounding singers ever, I think the only way he could have possibly had a hope in hell would have been to flip it and turn it into a slow jazz jam or something like that. As it was, it was pretty bad. Casey Abrams may not be around for next weeks American Idol.

Jacob Lusk was the other loser of the night. I know American Idol judges love to fall over themselves as they compete to heap praise on him, but I just don’t get him. Sure, he can hit some high notes here and there, but now he is developing a style he calls the “Lusk Stank” which apparently means you hold every note out forever and make sure every note sees the full range of sound. Jacob Lusk is what I call a blubberer where he seems to just make noise as he sings in an effort to show off his range and power. I was never a fan and now it is just getting old.

There you have my picks for the best and worst of the guys this week on American Idol. Tune in tonight at 8PM on FOX to see the live results show and find out who stays and who goes.
