Glee Season 2 Ratings Drop 1 Million Viewers
Glee Season 2 ratings drop; 1 million viewers not interested.
Glee proved last night that all the tricks and stunts in the world are no match for pure, raw star power. Last night’s new episode of Glee Season 2 ran pretty much unopposed by major competition yet still failed to win its time slot. Despite the promise of three all new original songs written just for the show Glee came in second in the ratings behind a rerun of NCIS. To make things worse this was a big episode for the show as New Directions headed to regionals with a real chance to win.
But the allure of them potentially taking home the elusive “Glee” Regionals title, the new songs and even a long awaited kiss between Kurt and Blaine couldn’t hold the viewers over from last week. This week Glee brought in a respectable 10.8 million viewers, but that number down about 1.1 million form the 11.96 million that tuned in to see Gwyneth Paltrow return to the show. When Britney Spears was on the show earlier this season they brought in more than 13.5 million viewers. It just goes to show that there is no substitute for famous names.
What is more interesting to me is that Glee seems to have not picked up any new viewers since its very successful and highly rated episode that followed the Super Bowl this year. In actuality it is almost as if they have lost some viewers. Prior to the Super Bowl episode the show averaged around 11 million viewers per episode with eight of the first ten shows of the season pulling in more than 11 million viewers. Since the Super Bowl episode only two of the five episodes that have aired have broken the 11 million mark and one of those was the Gwyneth Paltrow episode. The other was the show that followed two days after the Super Bowl. Maybe Glee has just maximized its potential and will hold that core group of fans who will tune in every week then it will draw in the odd extra viewers for big event episodes. Or maybe this is a sign that Glee Season 2 is starting to tail off lose a little steam. It is still a juggernaut when it comes to selling music, so it is clearly too early to make any real judgments, but if things don’t improve, maybe they better see what Gwyneth Paltrow is doing all next season.
