‘Nightline’ interviewed Jesse James last night in response to his highly publicized infidelity. He explained that cheating on actress Sandra Bullock was a product of his tormented childhood.

Jesse James explains, “I was a terrorized kid. I was petrified of my dad … It wasn’t so much getting the shit beat out of me or getting my arm broken or getting kicked or whatever or punched, it was the in-between time. It was the fear of that happening again.” As a result of his lack of self-worth, he said, “I grew up with a huge amount of shame and fear and abandonment on my shoulders from a very young age, and I think, you know, the way my mind rationalized cheating, ‘Well, you know, I might as well do whatever I can to like run her off, ’cause she is going to find out what I am anyway and leave me anyway.'”

Jesse also admitted that after Sandra Bullock adopted “Baby Louie”, he felt safe and he thought there was a chance she would never leave him. Jesse James said, “To see her in the role as mother is, like, one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. She is like a fish to water. … As soon as she put that baby into her hands it was automatic and amazing. I found a new trust for her, like I knew she wasn’t going to leave, and our relationship blossomed.”

But the cheating and infidelity escalated which ultimately ended with Sandra Bullock filing for divorce. Sandra Bullock was said to support Jesse’s decision to go to sex rehab even though the divorce would proceed. Jesse said, “I just told her I was going to get some help and I wanted to make sure she would take care of  Sunny. He added that Bullock was “proud” of him.
