The ABC comedy Modern Family took home three Emmy Awards Sunday, winning for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. This is the first time ABC has won the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy since 1988 when The Wonder Years took home the trophy. Bigger news than finally ending ABC’s 22-year drought in that category, is that Modern Family knocked off 30 Rock which has won this category each of the last three years.

Modern Family is very aptly named show. Shot in a mock-documentary style, the show follows three different families whose lives are intertwined. Among these families are a gay couple and their adopted Vietnamese baby. While the show has an average audience of 11 million viewers each week, it is among the lower rated shows that were nominated in these categories and it still has yet to find a large audience in middle-America.

Perhaps Eric Stonestreet’s Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series can help change that. With these three awards now on their mantle, the show is going to be awash of positive press and is working hard to change the stereotypes of gay couples. Gone are the typical flamboyant men who are over the top every second of every day. Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson play their characters as every day guys who happen to be gay and at times might still have a few “fabulous” moments. They are not the caricatures of gay men that Hollywood loves, but instead they are just men who happen to be gay and be in love. It is funny, realistic and has been striking a chord with viewers; perhaps Stonestreet’s Emmy win will help open some eyes and convinces some new viewers to give the show a chance.

Until its three Emmy wins, Modern Family was mostly known for featuring a gay kiss. Now it takes its place among shows like 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office as one of the best acted, written and all around put together shows. With many surprising wins at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, Modern Family’s win was among the biggest shocks and this show probably stood to gain the most from a win. Now we will have to wait and see what they do with this new-found fame.

Catch the Modern Family Season 2 Premiere Wednesday, September 22nd at 9|8c on ABC.
