Music Vid Comparison: Lady Gaga vs. Britney Spears

lady gaga britney spearsBritney Spears and Lady Gaga music video comparison.

When Britney Spears released her latest music video for “Hold it Against Me,” perhaps the pop singer didn’t anticipate having to vie for attention against one of the biggest celeb singers around, the fabulous Lady Gaga.  Both celebrities seem to have similar dance moves, and both songs fit neatly into the pop music niche, but that’s about all the two videos have in common. Britney definitely gets props for sporting flat abs after multiple pregnancies, but in her “Hold it Against Me” video, it seems like she is trying a bit too hard (to be different).

Lady Gaga’s  “Born this Way” video stays true to Gaga’s bizarre albeit popular fashion style, and luckily for Gaga, if she’s ever trying too hard no one would be the wiser, because she always pushes things to the absolute limit. “Born this Way,” for example, is basically a short film, as it is 7 minutes in length.

The video features abstract motifs relating to birth and death. The first few minutes of the video are really cool and sci-fi, although some will doubtlessly bash the video for being “controversial,” when really it’s just artsy. Yes, there is a point where kaleidoscopic effects make it look like Lady Gaga is giving birth. Yes Lady Gaga is dancing around in her undies (although this seems standard in pop music nowadays). But the music video as a whole is very creative, and the lyrics will definitely be embraced at any gay club with common sense.

It’s a breath of fresh air from Britney Spears’s latest vid, which had product placement to a nauseating degree, and which felt like it was lacking in some of Brit’s former lustre. Hopefully in the future we can expect better quality vids from Britney, and weirder vids from Gaga (if that’s even possible).
