Winter’s Bone Underdog Oscars 2011 Academy Awards
Winter’s Bone is a underdog at tonights Oscars 2011 Academy Awards; Will it win?
It seems like every year at the Oscars there is at least one movie that takes its lead actor and announces them as a bonafide star. That is the case with Best Picture Oscar 2011 nominee Winter’s Bone. The movie alone deserves its accolades, but it is star Jennifer Lawrence who anchors this movie and solidifies herself as one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars.
Winter’s Bone tells the story of a 17 year old depressed mother who works hard to keep her family together in a poor rural area of the Ozark Mountains. Her father deals drugs to make money and has had plenty of trouble with the law. He was arrested, got bailed out and is now missing. The local sheriff tells Dee (Jennifer Lawrence) that her dad put the family home up as collateral for his bail and unless he shows up for his trial on time they will lose the house. Dee, desperate to keep a roof over her family’s head, goes in search of her dad and finds herself in a very dangerous world.
This is only director Debra Granik’s second movie that she has helmed and she has hit a homerun. She also wrote the script and had the foresight to cast the relatively unknown Lawrence in the lead role. It was a big risk and she was thusly rewarded for it. Winter’s Bone has been nominated for four Oscars including: Best picture, Best Supporting Actor John Hawkes, Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Winter’s Bone has to be a pretty big longshot to win Best Picture, but I think she has a shot at winning the writing award. This movie may not take home any trophies, but it has made a splash and has made its lead actor and director very hot properties.
