annette bening oscar 2011Annette Bening is a long shot to win Oscars 2011 Best Actress award.

Annette Bening is a Hollywood icon who has stared in over 30 movies. Her Oscar 2011 Best Actress  nomination is her fourth such nomination in her career. She has never won and while she is probably a longshot this year as well, she might just pull off an Academy Awards surprise.

Annette Bening stars as Nic one half of a married lesbian couple with two kids in the Best Picture nominated The Kids Are All Right. The story follows Nic and her partner Jules (Julianne Moore) who have each give birth to one of the couple’s two children. Both kids were conceived via artificial insemination and share the same sperm donor. When the kids decide to go looking for their biological father they meet Paul (Mark Ruffalo) who is also nominated for his role in his movie). The kids are happy to have Paul in their lives and quickly connect with them. Nic and Jules are not very happy at all. They are upset that the kids went behind their backs and they are not so sure they want Paul in all of their lives.

The Kids Are All Right opens up a window into a world that most of us will never live in and gives us a genuine look at a family drama. Annette Bening is perfection as a physician who us comfortable in her life and also has a need to be in control of her life and her family. When Paul enters the picture some of that control unravels and we watch as she struggles with herself, her kids and her wife to find what she really wants in life.

Annette Bening’s previous Oscar nominations include Best Actress in 2005 for Being Julia, Best Actress in 2000 for American Beauty and Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for the Grifters. She was unable to win the Oscar in any of those years and I have a feeling her dry spell is about to continue. She is up against some strong competition and all signs are pointing towards Natalie Portman and the tour de force performance she gave in Black Swan. If Bening wins it will be considered a pretty big upset, but even if she doesn’t she is one of the best actresses working today and is well deserving of this recognition.
