New Music Tuesday: Kanye West, Britney Spears, Adele
New music today includes Kanye West, Britney Spears, Adele and unreleased Johnny Cash.
This week in new music we saw a few different things that are well worth mentioning. Let’s start with the videos and singles. The video for Kanye West’s song “All of the Lights” featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi was released over the weekend. It is directed by Hype Williams, but isn’t all that impressive. At least half the video is just the lyrics to the song flashing on the screen. It isn’t bad, but I was expecting more and it should in no way diminish that it is a good song from a great album. [Britney Spears and Adele also have new music]
Speaking of expecting more, the new Britney Spears video for “Hold it Against Me” also came out. It is a huge hit with 10 million views in just four days. For all of its hype, “Hold it Against Me” is kind of an average video. It basically flashes back and forth between Britney dancing in front of a group of male dancers surrounded by TVs, lights, video and her in a huge wedding dress in another room. Towards the last third of it is when things finally get moving as Britney has a fight scene with herself that is pretty cool and she starts shooting this paint all over the place and dyes her dress with it. To be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I guess I was just expecting a little more. This is one of those cases where the video really has nothing to do with the song. In other Britney Spears news she also debuted a 20 second clip that is a teaser to her new single called “I Wanna Go.” The clip has a heavy dance beat and Britney with a million effects on her voice sounding almost robotic. Clearly this new record is going to be dance heavy and very upbeat.
Talk about great timing. Adele’s new album 21 hits stores today, just a few days after the Grammy Awards where she was nominated. She has been getting a lot of great press for this record which was released in her native U.K. about a month ago. Adele has a soulful, wounded voice that works perfectly for the style of soul infused pop/rock that she sings. She often gets compared to Amy Winehouse, but I think it should be the other way around. Amy Winehouse should be compared to Adele because I think Adele is a lot better.
The other big albums out this week are two different volumes for the Bootleg series by Johnny Cash. These are titled Bootleg Volume 1: Personal Fire and Bootleg Volume 2: From Memphis to Hollywood. These two albums contain never before released tracks, demos, hard-to-find singles and other rarities. They work as kind of a roadmap of Cash’s early career as he went from being an unknown traveling musician to being a star. These might not be for everyone, but if you are a big Cash fan then these albums are sure to make you very happy.
So there you have it. It is kind of a slim week this week, but there is a lot of great stuff coming down the pike in the next few weeks including new albums by REM, Lady Gaga, Avril Lavigne and Lucinda Williams. See you next week and happy listening.
