Grammy Awards: Album of the Year 2011 Nominees [POLL]
The Grammy Awards are on in just a few minutes and here are the nominees for album of the year.
With the Grammy Awards 2011 on tonight I wanted to take a minute and talk about the nominations for Album of the Year (Lady Gaga, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry) as well as make my predictions. The Grammys can be hard to predict because they often play it safe and sometimes will pick winners out of nowhere. I think many people still remember when Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Grammy back in 1989. Recently they seem to have fewer of these types of things, but you never know how it is going to go which is why you should tune it, you might see something crazy happen.
This year’s Album of the Year nominees are Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs, Eminem’s Recovery, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, and Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream. These are five albums that run the gamut as far as musical styles go.
For me the two favorites here are Lady Gaga and Eminem. That doesn’t mean the others can’t win. As I said above the Grammy Awards sometimes shock people. I just don’t think Arcade Fire is mainstream enough for them. They will occasionally pick artists who are a little less known and Arcade Fire is getting bigger, but I just have this feeling they are no big enough to take this one. Katy Perry has sold a lot of records over the last few years and Teenage Dream is a big record with some major hits on it, she has a punchers chance here, but I think the Grammy voters will see her as “too pop” and not serious enough to deserve the award. Lady Antebellum’s main problem is that they are a country act not named Taylor Swift. The Grammy voters simply don’t give this award to country acts. Taylor Swift won it last year and you can argue that she is just as much pop as country. The Dixie Chicks won it in 2007, but that album had a lot of pop sensibilities to it as well. All in all this award has only been given to country artists twice (both the aforementioned artists) in the last 40 years. Those odds are not good for Lady Antebellum.
That brings us to Eminem and Lady Gaga. I think it’s a coin flip. Lady Gaga was nominated last year for her album The Fame, but she ran into the juggernaut that is Taylor Swift. This year very well could be her year. She has become politically active and has had a huge year. She is one of the most influential people in music right now and the Grammy Awards voters seem to love that. Eminem is just as likely to win. The Grammy voters love a comeback and his album Recovery was a comeback of epic proportion. The question will come down to whether they prefer the glam and pop of Gaga or the self-dissection of Eminem. If I had to pick the winner I think they will give it to Gaga and Eminem will win Record of the Year for his song “Love the Way You Lie.”
