Derek Hough Dancing With The Stars and Cobu 3D
Derek Hough takes a break from DWTS to become an actor.
Derek Hough knows a good thing when he’s got it and even though he is leaving it behind for a little while, he is smart enough to know where his home is. Derek Hough is one of the professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars. He announced today that he will not be on the show for the upcoming season 12 because he is taking some time away to film a movie.
While most people would jump at the chance to star in a movie and would hope that the movie could turn them into a star, Derek seems to know how he got famous and what keeps his name out there – Dancing with the Stars. He plans to return to the show in the fall for season 13 and it seems as if the producers of the show are more than happy to let him spread his wings. “We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from Dancing with the Stars to pursue his film career and we look forward to having him return to the show in the fall.” Conrad Green, DWTS executive producer said.
The movie in question is a dance movie titled Cobu 3D. In it Derek Hough will play a street dancer from New Orleans who moves to New York and falls for an Asian drummer (played by Korean pop star BoA). The story is a Romeo and Juliet meets West Side Story sort of thing as Hough’s dance group is a rival of his new found girlfriend’s.
Hough says he will be back to DWTS in the fall and that he is just taking a break and “taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist.” He also told the producers of DWTS that he will return to the show with a whole new set of skills.
There is no word yet on who might replace him for this season and I have a feeling if his movie somehow becomes a big hit Derek Hough might end up leaving the show for good, but in the meantime he is doing it right. He sticks with what made him a star and is going off to pursue something on the short term. Too often you see people on hit shows leave to pursue a career away from that show only to have the first thing they do bomb and their career is never the same. Here Hough gets to make a movie, gets to spread his wings, and then if the movie doesn’t do well it is no big deal because he is still on one of the biggest, highest rated shows on TV. It is a win-win situation for him. It is also a very smart move that other stars could learn from.
