Super Bowl 2011: Keith Urban, Maroon 5, Steelers vs. Packers
Super Bowl 2011 adds Keith Urban and Maroon 5 to pre-game performers as Steelers get ready for Packers.
We are T-minus 10 days and counting until the 2011 Super Bowl XLV (Pittsburgh Steelers – Green Bay Packers) and on the entertainment side things are starting to line up. Today it was announced that country superstar Keith Urban and popular pop/rock group Maroon 5 will be headlining the pre-game entertainment. It had been announced previously that Urban would be involved with the entertainment at the Super Bowl 2011, but it was unclear what he would do and where/when he would perform. Urban has said he plans to include songs from his newly released album Get Closer. I would also look for him to throw in a couple of hits as well.
While Urban makes perfect sense for the show since NFL football and country music goes hand in hand, Maroon 5 is an interesting choice. They have had some hit songs and are a well-known band, but they aren’t the typical kind of band you associate with football. They do have a reasonably new album out and are touring, so it is possible they are just pushing to get any kind of publicity they can. Maroon 5 will also be pulling double duty over that weekend as they serve as the musical entertainment at DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl which takes place the day before the big game.
Joining Urban and Maroon 5 for the NFL Tailgate Party before the game will also be Blue Man Group. Combined they make for three very different shows which should mean there is something for just about everyone.
Christina Aguilera will be performing the national anthem while the Black Eyed Peas will handle the halftime entertainment duties. Having the Black Eyed Peas as the halftime entertainment is a big shift for the network. Ever since the Janet Jackson incident it has been like the Taliban has been running the show because there haven’t been any women near that stage. So Fergie will be our first post-nipplegate female singer.
With a few days left until the party starts rolling we may get more announcements of additional performers so keep your eyes on us for all your Super Bowl entertainment news.
Maroon 5 and Keith Urban open up for the big game on Sunday, February 6th.
