Harry Potter star Afshan Azad who plays Harry’s friend Padma Patil in the wildly popular movies (latest one is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) survived a three hour ordeal where she was punched, dragged by her hair and threatened with death by her father and older brother and now her brother is heading to prison for his actions. The reason for their violence towards her? She was dating a non-Muslim man and had refused to enter into a pre-arranged marriage. She was called a “slag” and a “prostitute” and was so scared of what might happen to her that she escaped out a window.

Her father and brother were both arrested, but both were cleared of the charges that they threatened to killer her when she refused to testify against them. She had made it clear that she wanted no action taken against them out of fear for her own safety.  While Afshan Azad’s father was cleared of all charges, her brother was not. He was the main perpetrator in this crime according to U.K.’s Manchester Crown Court. According to accounts of the incident Afshan’s brother overheard her talking on the phone to her boyfriend – a Hindu – so he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her across the room punching her repeatedly. She suffered bruising and swelling.

Prior to his handing down the sentence, Afshan wrote the judge in her brother’s case a letter asking him to not send her brother to prison. She told him that she has forgiven her brother for what he did to her.

The judge, apparently, didn’t care. He sentenced the brother Ahraf Azad to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to beating his sister.

The judge told him as he handed down the sentence: “This is a sentence that is designed to punish you for what you did and also to send out a clear message to others that domestic violence involving circumstances such as have arisen here cannot be tolerated.”

It is not all bad news for Afshan Azad. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was released a few months ago and did well at the box office. The final installment of the Harry Potter series is set for release on July 15th and is expected to do just as well, if not better.
