“American Idol” Ratings: Idol Mania 2011!
American Idol 2011 hopes to bring about higher ratings with a bunch of new changes.
They say that the only constant in life is change and never has that saying been truer than on this new upcoming season of American Idol. The show has had changes in the past and recently has even survived a shake-up among the judges, but going into this new season which starts tonight on FOX there are more changes than ever before. Here are just a few of the new and different things to expect this year from American Idol.
The obvious one is the change in judges. Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi are all gone from last year and have been replaced with Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. This, I feel, is the biggest hurdle that the show will have to jump in order to survive. People loved to hate Simon and now he is gone. It remains to be seen how the public responds to that.
There are also some format changes. The last several seasons have had the tryout/audition shows packed with bad singers. We will still see the bad, odd and just plain weird, but there will also be more good singers. When they have narrowed the group down to around 40 contestants they will introduce a “sing for your life” round. This will allow the contestants to sing one song then after all of the contestants have performed the judges will pair it down to around 12-15 finalist. The round of 24 will be removed completely.
The finalists will all be moved into a mansion together where they will live until they are voted off. During the final rounds contestants will be allowed to sing original songs and they will be able to have background dancers and different sets for their performances. It is also rumored that they will compete in a music video phase to see how well they can act and perform on video.
One other change that is a departure from the past is that the finalist will be putting out music a lot faster, possibly even while they are still on the show. In the past after the season ended there was a tour with the finalist then a few months later we got the debut records from the winner followed by the runners up. These days the winners are not selling very well and there is so much competition that they are going to move those release dates up and try to get the music out there while the names are still fresh in the minds of the fans.
It should be an interesting season of American Idol. I look forward to seeing how they pull it all together. We can all find out starting tonight at 8|7c on FOX.
