American Idol at the NFL Playoffs 2011

american idol lee dewyzeAmerican Idol Lee DeWyze was scheduled to perform at Sunday’s NFL Playoff game which pits the Packers vs. Bears.

American Idol premieres tomorrow night but the show isn’t the only thing making headlines. It turns out that last year’s AI winner, Lee DeWyze has ruffled some feathers of NFL fans. DeWyze was scheduled to perform the National Anthem on Sunday at Soldier Field when the Green Bay Packers take on the Chicago Bears as they battle it out for a spot in the Super Bowl. Now it doesn’t look like that is going to happen.

Instead of singing the national anthem before the Packers-Bears game, Lee DeWyze will be performing at half time. Chicago Bears fans want Jim Cornelison of the Chicago Black Hawks to perform the anthem again. I guess they are superstitious because Jim performed last week and they beat the Seahawks.

Now I was watching the game last week and I thought Cornelison sounded awful. I think it’s pretty disrespectful to DeWyze who hails from Chicago to be asked to not do the anthem. I don’t care what in the hell you people in Chicago are smoking but Jim Cornelison sounded like a train wreck singing the anthem. People refer to his performance as “magical” and I just don’t get it. Regardless of my personal opinion, Lee DeWyze has respectfully agreed to perform at half time during the NFL Playoffs game this Sunday which pits Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers against Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears.

Make sure you tune in tomorrow as well when American Idol Season 10 premieres at 8|7c on FOX.

  1. Thank goodness you said this! I was beginning to think I was losing my mind. I’m a Bears fan and so of course I heard Mr. Cornelison sing last Sunday. He was horrible. Flat through the whole thing. I assume it was some kind of sound issue, because he’s obviously an opera singer or damned close to it, but yikes! And then the way everyone was going on, I was starting to think my ears were lying to me.

I hope the fans are more gracious to Lee on Sunday than they have been so far this week. Of course none of this was “his” idea, and he doesn’t deserve to be harrassed for it.
