Ricky Gervais Disses Hugh Hefner, Charlie Sheen, Scientology
Ricky Gervais slams Hugh Hefer, Charlie Sheen plus many more at 2011 Golden Globe Awards.
Ricky Gervais seems to be one of those guys that you either love or hate and last night at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards there were plenty of both opinions on display for the comic. The show itself brought in just around 17 million viewers up about 5% from last year. Gervais returned as host and wasted no time skewering the celebs in attendance.
Gervais’ monologue came out swinging. After a joke about the crowd being drunk he took a stab at Charlie Sheen and his recent drunken naked party with a porn star then he moved on to attack 3D movies and attacked the Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp movie The Tourist. He joked that it got nominated because the producers took the Hollywood Foreign Press members to see Cher in concert.
Ricky Gervais took aim at Sex and the City 2 saying that the special effects awards should go to the person who airbrushed the poster for that movie. The joke that got the biggest gasp from the audience was when he pointed out that I Love You Phillip Morris was not nominated. He said it is a movie that stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as two straight actors playing gay men which was the opposite of some famous Scientologists.
Moving on from actors Gervais set his sights on Hugh Hefner and talked about his recent engagement. He said that the reason his 24 year old fiancée’ agreed to marry him is because she thought he was 94 years old not 84. Gervais advised her to just hold out and not look at his penis when she touches it. That joke got some laughs and Robert De Niro seemed to like it.
Throughout the night Gervais kept taking shots and it angered some people. Robert Downey Jr. remarked on stage that Gervais was “mean-spirited” and LA Times TV Critic Mary McNamara wrote that he was falling flat and making the audience and presenters uncomfortable and even angry. Even the HFPA President Phillip Berk said he felt some of the things Gervais said were “totally unacceptable.”
At one point during the show Gervais actually disappeared for about an hour leaving many to speculate that the producers of the show were so unhappy with him that he was fired midway through the night. I guess how you felt about it depends on where you stand. I found him to be very funny, but I love that uncomfortable humor. I could see how people could easily find it offensive. Regardless of how you feel about it, one thing is for sure, it was memorable. Also, I would guess it is safe to assume he won’t be back next year.
