Taylor Swift Tops Kanye West and Nicki Minaj
Taylor Swift can’t be stopped. The weeks following up the holidays are normally pretty slow for record sales, but apparently those normal rules don’t apply for Taylor because once again she has topped the Billboard 200 chart. This is the sixth time since the “Speak Now” album release that it has taken the top spot. It really is a testament to her staying power and popularity that now almost three months after the records release it returns to the top spot. Most albums that sell big do so for a few weeks the slowly, but surely die off and decline down the charts. Taylor keeps chugging along.
It has been 11 weeks since the release of Speak Now. The record debuted at #1 and sold over 1 million copies that first week. It has held the top spot more than half of the weeks since its release. There have been some challengers. Susan Boyle and Kanye West knocked her out of the top spot, but fell off and gave the top spot back to Taylor. Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars and Rihanna have all sold well, but not well enough to knock the queen from her throne.
This week her sales total of 52,000 units also sets another sort of record. It is the lowest total ever had by a number 1 album on the Billboard 200 so it could be a sign that her reign is about to end. In the coming weeks there are some bigger records about to be released so it will be interesting to see if Taylor Swift can fend off those challengers or if this is her last week at the top. I have a feeling she has at least a few more weeks in the top spot left in this record so this is probably not the last time we will see Speak Now on the top of the charts.
